Dementia is basically a disturbance of the cognitive processes in the brain. If causes cognitive defects and deficits which can lead to problems such as memory impairment and degradation of the mental process in the brain. Dementia causes chronic imbalance of activities and processes that are vital for the sanity of the brain.
Dementia is progressive and is basically irreversible once the process starts. Even if you cure the underlying cause that was the reason for dementia to develop, it still cannot be treated completely. Its onset is usually seen in the elderly and rarely any cases in the juvenile age have been seen. Dementia can be broadly categorized into two main types, cortical and sub cortical. These two are different regions of the brain and will be discussed further on.
There are mainly three types of cortical dementia; Primary degenerative dementia, atherosclerotic dementia and lastly mixture of both these dementias. Mostly cases have shown to suffer from primary degenerative dementia such as the Alzheimer disease. Around 50 to 60% of cases suffering dementia are said to have this type. The second type of dementia, which is the atherosclerotic dementia, is seen to be present in up to 15 to 20% of the patients.
It has been argues though, that the prevalence of the second type of dementia is so less due to the fact, that many doctors diagnose the patients wrongly of Primary degenerative dementia. The last type of dementia is seen is rare cases. In most of the people suffering from dementia, loss of impulse control has been seen when it comes to linguistic and sexual responses.
The impaired level of functioning makes the patient more prone to stress related diseases and the most minor of stresses and pressure can lead to have a great amount of adverse affect on the brain. Moreover, the general trend that has been seen in this disease is a slow, deterioration of the mind and senses that is not reversible.
Depression and symptoms seen in it can often be confused and mixed up with dementia. Patients suffering from depression can complain of having memory lapses, cognitive problems and may complain they are unable to have control over their impulses. But it is usually seen that in such patients a little encouragement and help can lead them to finish whatever cognitive tasks they have been provided with. This condition is termed as pseudo dementia, meaning a fake condition imposed on oneself. It is a depression induced dementia, which can be easily reversed and seen to eliminate once the phase of depression ends.
Many treatments and dementia care plans are available to keep the person healthy as long as he or she can be. Since this condition is irreversible one cannot cure this disease completely. Dementia care plans are available in many hospitals for such patients such as regular checkups and assessments of the sensory system, measurement of the intensity of deterioration of cognitive system, functional capacity of the patient and his or her ability to take care of them.
Dementia care plans also involve assessing any threats the patient might have to him or herself, assessing emotional responsiveness and lastly asses the level of support their care givers have.
