All people get a little down at some point. Mild depression is common for many to deal with. However, there are also serious phases of depression a person can suffer through. Often, these high levels of depression are tied in with a much more serious mental illness that is contributing to the process. Bipolar disorder is among the most serious of psychiatric disorders that yields such issues.
Bipolar disorder remains a very complex psychiatric condition. Contributing to its complexity is the fact that there are two different modes that bipolar disorder embodies. In addition to manic highs, there are also very serious depressed lows. For some, it is the lows that are considered the most problematic. As such, it is important to clearly understand the symptoms of bipolar disorder based depression.
The most common symptoms of bipolar disorder depression are the following:
Fatigue: We all suffer from being tired at some point but when the feeling of massive and chronic fatigue proves overwhelming, the odds are strong that this is due to severe depression. When it seems all your energy is sapped, you may be dealing with bipolar induced fatigue which is assuredly serious.
Sadness: This is not the type of sadness you can easily shake off. Rather, it is a form of sadness that is deep, severe, and perpetually permeating. Such sadness is so severe it makes the ability to properly live one’s life difficult.
Irritability: People are not always in the best frame of mind or attitude when they are depressed. This can often lead to being irritable or embodying an attitude of anxiety. Neither of which will make the afflicted very endearing to other people.
Decreased Appetite: A lack of desire to eat is a common symptom of depression. In some ways, it is the mind’s way of punishing the body on a subconscious level. Regardless of the reason for a decreased appetite, the impact on your health will not be a positive one.
Lethargy: Lethargy can be described as fatigue taken to a more ominous level. When you are lethargic, the odds are likely that you just can’t get moving. You are not just fatigued. You are in a state where you can’t or won’t move. Imagine sitting in a stupor for several hours at a time. This would be the unfortunate onset of serious lethargy.
Diminished Capacity for Taking Part in Activities: All those things you used to love doing stop being all that interesting to you anymore. Considering that fatigue and lethargy are common symptoms of bipolar depression, a complete disinterest in and a reduced desire to venture into your favorite activities is limited.
A Sense of Despair: This might be the most frightening of al the bipolar disorder symptoms. It truly does create a rather ugly psychological condition where you feel you have no options in life. Such a state of mind can give way to great paranoia which is definitely not helpful for one’s mental well being. Attitudes of worthlessness and guilt can also arise when serious depression manifests.
Suicidal Thoughts: These are extreme symptoms of bipolar depression and they set the stage for potential attempts at suicide. Consider the presence of such symptoms to be the main reason why it is best to seek help when bipolar depression becomes a little too difficult to bear.
